FBI Agent Saga Anderson and her partner Alex Casey are sent to the town of Bright Falls, Washington to investigate a series of ritual murders. They investigate the fourth and final victim in the case, former FBI Agent Robert Nightingale, who had been missing for 13 years before being murdered by a group called "The Tree Cult." In addition to Nightingale's corpse, Saga finds a mysterious handwritten page that seems to predict the future. While exploring the town, they meet Sheriff Tim Breaker, who promises to help them with the investigation. However, Saga notices that several people in Bright Falls act as if they have known her for years, despite this being her first visit to the town. Saga later performs an autopsy on Nightingale's corpse and finds another page from the manuscript inside her chest. Nightingale's corpse suddenly resurrects and escapes from the morgue, while Breaker mysteriously disappears.
